So let me tell you a little story about one of the headliners of this newborn festival called Chicago Open Air.  I saw Rammstein at the Newport Music Hall shortly after graduating High School, July 30th 2001.  They were on tour supporting their latest release called Mutter which is still my favorite album to date, just ahead of Sehnsucht and Rosenrot.  I Have German heritage and always felt some silly connection to the band even though I only knew maybe five words in the language.  i once tried to get my German grandma to translate the lyrics thinking it would give us something to talk about.  Needless to say she read some of the lyrics, threw them down and refused my curiosities.

There are a few songs I have looked up using the almighty google but for the most part I enjoy the music thoroughly, as is with a limited knowledge of the actual meaning.  But back to the show.  I had heard rumors of the antics they put on but I wasn’t prepared for what I’d see, or feel.

Here is the set list from that show.

I’m not kidding at all when I say I sat up front all night waiting for them to take the stage and by the time I left the show, I was actually SUNBURNED!  In reality I supposed I was cooked a bit rare as my face and arms were red for a few weeks.  Between the flame throwing gas mask, the fire zip lines, flaming boots, mic stands and outfits I’m truly amazed the whole venue didn’t go up in flames.  They took a long vacation from touring the US after that one, rumors swirled about simulates sex acts, bannings for overuse of pyrotechnics (is that possible), even down to some horse crap about 9/11.

Rammstein has been my number one concert experience since that day, I’ve yet to see a show like it. The next bands on my top five are TOOL, Van Halen, Rob Zombie, and Killswitch Engage (I worked barrier security for that one).

Tickets are still on sale for this show, I promise…..You will regret missing this show so act now!
