Detroit, Michigan. The Fillmore. The lights turned down. The crowd cheered a familiar chant. To most bands, this chant would be unwanted, but this wasn’t any band.
“Primus sucks! Primus sucks!” filled the room.
Then out of the shadows a loan guitarist took stage. Illuminated by only his guitar pedals, Larry LaLonde strikes a chord, projecting a psychedelic sound. The crowds chant turns to roars as the bass starts thumping. Something was in the air. And when Les Claypool said the words “Those damn blue collar tweekers are the backbone of this town!” the crowd erupted along with drums of Tim “Herb” Alexander.
Detroit was in for a performance of a lifetime, comprised of two sets. The first set:
However it was the second act that took crowd to a world of peer imagination. Primus played their latest album, “Primus & the Chocolate Factory with the Fungi Ensemble” in near entirety. An album inspired by the 1971 movie “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” starring Gene Wilder. The first album with drummer Tim “Herb” Alexander since 1995’s “Tales From the Punchbowl”. Also joining on stage, the Fungi Ensemble Mike Dillion (on percussion and vibes) and Sam Bass (cello).
The newly eerie, fun, yet familiar sounds of Primus combined with the Wonka atmosphere put the audience in a mind altering trance. Subtle theatrics were also part of the show. Oompa Loompas with over sized heads joined the band to dance on stage to “Oompa Violet”. During the show, Claypool disappeared off stage and reappeared dressed like Gene Wilder’s Wonka during their recreation of “Pure Imagination”. Sneaking back on stage with swagger and campy demeanor. However the theatrics never once took away anything from the music. Primus’s rebirth of the Wonka spirit is near perfect and everything you’d expect from a Primus/Wonka incarnation.
