This was one of the cooler shows I have ever been able to shoot, not just cause I’m gaga for Maria Brink cause really….who isn’t, but this time around there was no photo limit. I’m not sure who controls that directly, whether its the headliner or the management, but it was a wonderful surprise that allowed me to capture some shots that I may never have gotten otherwise.
I had a conversation today with a coworker about theatrics in music and the on stage performance of bands today and I’ve got to say, this show was over the top but it’s exactly what I wanted, especially being behind a camera. With album sales going through growing pains for the record industry across the board, it seems a lot of bands have gone to a more simple and cheap stage show. Not the case with In This Moment, this was a spectacle you may expect from Metallica, Avenged Sevenfold, Nine Inch Nails or even Primus. There were multiple set changes and some that required careful set up, lest Maria fall on her ass while she’s up on a high chair dancing.
Before this show I was tossing around feelings that I preferred older In This Moment (The Dream) and I still love that album the most. The thought that I had was that the newer albums seem to be the “Maria Brink show”, and I was worried that I wouldn’t get to see the awesome musical talent shine through that backed her up on The Dream album. I was pleasantly surprised once again. While Maria took center stage and was the obvious focal point of the band, each member had plenty of spot light with a solo from the strings and a great drum solo to follow that up. This was a complete show in my book, she even brought a few fans on stage including a kid who couldn’t have been older than 8, stopping to give her motherly advice that he may be a bit young to crowd surf. At the end, after giving the crowd that encore they were rioting for, she brought out her entire stage crew and gave them all a little lime light for keeping the band running and safe while on stage. Maria definitely still holds the title of best female vocalist in the rock/metal genre for many reasons.
Even before In This Moment set foot on stage I was still having a great time, I arrived late but managed to catch all of Twelve Foot Ninja‘s set and besides In This Moment, they were on the top of my must see list. Catch these guys while you can, they are phenomenal musicians from Australia and you never know when they will be back around…it’s a bit of a journey
Then there was Starset, and I honestly had no idea they were on the bill, when I originally saw the press release they weren’t mentioned. I was stoked to get a chance to see this show everyone had been talking about from a home town band that honestly came out of nowhere. Dustin Bates really hit a grand slam when her formed Starset from the ashes of Downplay. The costumes are a sweet touch and you can even get your own replica from their website
