Brain Tentacles – The Mindfuck Is In The Music

by Ashley Davison on September 9, 2016

Music you hear on the radio today has been curated to the masses for its wide appeal to the average listener. I love solid rock tunes, especially if they have been peppered with flair, but I am the dissonance in the consonant choir. I seek out avant-garde outfits with whom to tickle my ears and explore the realm of musical possibility because I value ingenuity and novelty so highly.

One of the more interesting collaborations I have listened to is Brain Tentacles, and yes, the music is about as strange as the name implies. The style is so incongruent with any formal genre I can think of (although I am not a genre-ist by any means) that the only way I can really describe it IS avant-garde. Upon first listen, however, my thought is that all of my favorite 90’s video games got reworked soundtracks by a metal band, and the result is clear as day in this new music video.

The band has certainly managed to live up to the mystique of the proverbial fruitcake, created from a hodge-podge of genres and mixed into a fluffy batter and baked to dubious perfection to most recipients. I personally love jazz, and the saxophone stand-in for lead vocals is a welcome surprise. Check out their self-titled debut album, out September 30th, and let me know what you think in the comments!
