Interview: Bobaflex 2016 North American Tour and more….

by Craig Noce on March 1, 2016

On Friday February 26th, Bobaflex kicked off the first show of their 2016 North American Tour in Abilene, TX. Bobaflex will be touring throughout the summer in support of their 7th full-length studio release “Anything That Moves”, which was self produced and recorded at Sonic Lounge Studios in the heart of central Ohio. Formed in 1998 by brothers Shaun and Marty McCoy, the band has seen a variety of lineup changes over the years, but the current lineup is as solid as ever featuring Dave Tipple on guitar, Tommy Johnson on drums, and the band’s newest member, Jymmy Tolland, on bass guitar. These are not just along for the ride either, each of the members has something to contribute to all the tracks on the newest release.

The first leg of the US Tour opens with fellow artists The Veer Union, Artifas and Bridge to Grace, which runs through March 13th, wrapping up in Greensboro, NC. The second leg of the tour with Ill Nino kicks off on May 5th in Hollywood, CA and runs through June, and includes some select dates with Puddle of MuddShinedown and Chevelle.

ZTPMagazine had a chance to sit down with Marty, Dave and Jymmy at the Alrosa Villa just before they packed up their gear and headed off to Texas to start the tour.  Marty gave us some insight about the tour, the new album, past struggles and plans for the future; and of course had a little fun too….

We have also given the new album “Anything That Moves”, a good solid listen, again and again and again … yeah, we think it is that good and we believe you will too.  The albums opening track “Start a War” hits you right in the face with a hard pounding, speed metal drum line and aggressive power guitar that drops you into a vocally melodic apocalyptic chorus of the end of the world.

Lose Control” is a speedy beat with a mix of harsh, raspy vocals and a smooth harmony. A bit of darkness with a whole ton of attitude.

Dry Your Eyes” has a familiar, traditional Bobaflex sound with a more modern hard and crunchy lead guitar, a personal favorite.

Mama Don’t Take My Drugs Away” built on dark undertones of drug use with a fun, upbeat and groovy rhythm that really makes you want to get up and move.  This one should be played live and often, it has that irresistible groove that gets the crowd up and moving.  The track may seem at first glance to have a pro-drug slant, but in fact is warning for those who are actually paying attention, delivered in a way only Bobaflex could pull off. Well done!!

Spider In The Dark” was the second single and video release from the album with a powerful and pissed-off message that things are going to change, about taking control and doing it my way not yours!  It feels hard yet reminiscent of a metal ballad featuring the incredibly melodic and well orchestrated dual vocals of Marty McCoy guitarist Dave Tipple.

You Don’t Want to Know” has a classic hard rock guitar riff with a catchy chorus and drum line, and clocking in at just over 4 minutes as Marty mentioned before your not going to hear this one on the radio.  That in mind this is a track that the band just had fun with, cutting lose so to speak and fits right in with the black leather and chains, hard driving rock and roll.

End of the World” and the human race, be careful cranking this one up on the highway, the speedy drum line will likely have you breaking some laws before you know it.  Its heavy and fast with a smooth chorus, solid bass track and heart thumping beat.

Bobaflex is a live band, that’s just what they do, we think this is the best album release yet and the live performance is completely off the hook.  The 2016 tour is a must see for all hard core, heavy metal, rock and roll fans!
