Last week The Paramount in Huntington NY saw the kickoff of the off of Zakk Wylde/Black Label Society Unblackened Tour and I, for one, thought it kicked ass!
It all started with a cover of Pride & Glory’s “’Losin’ Your Mind” and was nothing but no stop, stripped down rock for the next 2 hours. Although the band remained seated and this was by far your standard Black Label Show, lacking walls of amps, it was also far from your typical acoustic show.
Zakk changed it up through the show with his various signature guitars but put those aside to take to a grand piano for songs like “Suicide Messiah”, “Angel of Mercy” and “The Blessed Hellride.” The crowd seemed thrilled to hear another Pride & Glory song in the way of “Machine Gun Man” with the biggest surprise on the night being “Scars” and “Empty Promises” which had never been played live before. The full set list is as follows:
Losin’ Your Mind (Pride & Glory cover)
Road Back Home
Spoke in the Wheel
House of Doom
Machine Gun Man (Pride & Glory cover)
Sold My Soul
In This River
Throwin’ It All Away
The Blessed Hellride
My Dying Time
That’s a pretty impressive set! I remember when “Catacombs of the Black Vatican” came out and many people weren’t thrilled with it and said it didn’t sound like BLS; that it was a total departure from what Zakk had done. I loved that album and yes the Unblackened Tour is also a departure from standard BLS but this was my favorite Black Label show to date.
If you’re a Black Label/Zakk fan with an open mind then I think you’re going to love this show and if you’re a southern rock or blues fan it’s something you shouldn’t miss. Check out the tour dates here
